Luna Online - Top Chef Entry
02:27pm 28/09/2009

Maggie
I'm recently addicted to Luna Online, but I haven't been active on their forums. Even though I started playing closed beta, I've been reluctant to jump in. Paranoia. lol.

Anyway, they've got a contest going called Luna Top Chef and the prizes seem pretty fun, so I thought I'd give it a shot! This is going to be a photo-heavy post, so I'll put most of the pics behind a cut and I'll include the recipes I used in addition to my notes and thoughts for next time.

Here's a sample to taste! I'll probably post all of the pics to facebook later in the week.

Adventuring Party Politics: The Campaign is Getting Ugly

Maggie
**disclaimer** yoinked this from myrrhdusa who got it from somehedgehog

GM: OK, the bugbear attacks you. What do you do?

OBAMA: I send one of my 672 henchmen after it.

MCCAIN: OK, seriously. Why does he have so many henchmen? I'm a level 72 ranger and he's only a level 8 paladin.

OBAMA: Well, if you'd bought the Grassroots Organizing and Oratory/Colgate Smile proficiencies you could min max it so that you...

MCCAIN: Why is he even IN this campaign? I thought this was supposed to be a high level party.

OBAMA: Well, maybe some people got tired of the grim and squinty "Matterhorn, son of Marathon" shtick you keep doing. Dude, could you be any less original?

MCCAIN: Oh my god, I did not leave my left nut in a tiger cage in the Tomb of Horrors to spend my Friday nights mopping up after the new kid.

OBAMA: "My friends, I am a totally unoriginal grizzled character class stereotype. I should lead the party because I have more testicular damage than that one."

MCCAIN: Yeah, well, you pal around with dark elves.

OBAMA: OH NO YOU DIDN'T.

In preparation for Hurricane Gustav...

Maggie
---To-do list of doom---

  1. buy massive amounts of alcohol - when Rita hit three years ago, we didn't have enough. it was bad.
  2. make sure all laundry is done - hand washing jeans is no bueno
  3. round up the emergency candles and buy more is necessary
  4. clean fish tank
  5. do all dishes in preparation of canned food days *sigh*
  6. call somebody to come mow this freaking lawn because it's scary and i swear there are pygmies
  7. bleach the hell out of bathtubs and fill with water - very useful for a multitude of things... wait a sec... our hot water is gas, not electric. hell yeah. hot showers at maggie's place as long as the water lines remain good *does a happy dance* - that was actually one of the worst parts of Rita was the whole no hot shower for a week
  8. ignore #7
  9. buy at least 14 gallons of water - don't mess with me, i grew up in Florida. i know that it's one gallon of water per day per person
  10. make sure we have enough canned food for at least 7 days - thank goodness that with Rita not all of the town was without power, may we be that lucky this time too
  11. round up all of our board games

am i forgetting anything?

Books Meme

Maggie
Yoinked this from Neheti :0)

What we have here is the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you've read, underline the ones you read for school, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish.
And [bracket] the books you own but haven't read yet.

Book List )

Heh, I think we should add something like... put *asterisks* around the titles that you've read, but can't recall except for a vague sense of dread (they must have been sooo ... life-changing) strike through titles that are just overrated and people really shouldn't bother with (The ones I struck through give me hives)... and put giant arrows <------------ next to the ones that you think people MUST read. :0) So um, yeah. I added that.

I must admit though, there are several books on here that I really want to read! Don't poke the lit major. I'm finishing up my last french lit class. *does a happy dance* A lovely book entitled Mère Solitude has most recently kicked my butt. For those of you who don't read in french, the title in english is Mother Solitude. I suggest reading this one in your native language, because holy moly... non-linear absurd subversive literature by a haitian in exile... it's a trip and a half. :0)

I haven't disappeared. I've just been facebook-ing it lately with the working and the schooling. I'm sad that I had to drop the Romantic Poetry class. *pouts*

... Just thought I would type something.

Oh yeah! The Discordian ritual went well last night, but I'm not sure how my Roma ramblings went. Me hopes well.

And now I have typed something. :0)

grief
04:11pm 18/08/2007

Maggie
Mattie and I have been talking about setting up an ancestor altar since May. We're also hoping to move, so the altar was put on hold... well, since then all of this has happened:

if the embed doesn't work, please click on the link. It's a great Mia Michaels piece that was featured on So You Think You Can Dance this past season. It's about a reunion in Heaven.

And then there's this friend's blog post about his grieving process. We'll call him Avery. He recently lost a friend to suicide. I was appalled by reading what his doctor told him. (names and such have been removed and/or changed for privacy)

Doc:  Grieving should last three months, anything more is excessive and should be delt with.
Me: dr. doc is full of it!
Avery:  maybe

I was, however, even more appalled by how one of Avery's friends replied to the same blog post.

Friend:  I think the doc is right... and I said it before I read this... Love you

And my reply. I was a good girl and replied only to Avery and not the "friend".

Me:  Grief is something that should always "be delt with", but setting some arbitrary timetable is bullshit. That being said, I understand that being in a constant state of emotional and physical pain is unhealthy.

There is NO timetable for grieving. While the sense of loss and the intermittent sadness never go away completely, people experience the cycle of grief differently. Some find that within a few weeks or months, the period between waves of distress lengthens, and they are able to feel peace, renewed hope, and enjoy life more and more of the time. Others may face years of being hit with what feels like relentless waves of grief.

I still have days, even 21 years after my father's death that feel like everything happened yesterday. I believe that it is very important to set up a safe space where it is ok to grieve... this includes allowing the entire marvelous array of emotions to be felt. Ancestor altars are something that many homes have whether or not they realize it, and "ancestors" can be anyone that you feel a strong connection to. Burn a white candle next to a picture or momento and ACKNOWLEDGE that you're thinking about the person. Speak your feelings outloud. Talk to the person.

The more I think about one human being saying to another through the guise of authority that "any grieving more than three months is excessive", the more my spirit hurts and the more righteously indignant I become. I am sincerely sorry that you had such a horrible experience. Doctors and therapists and such are supposed to be allies on our paths. They are supposed to help us validate our own emotions and work through them. They are supposed to help give us better coping strategies.

Grr. I wish we had more time together. I love you.

I just don't understand how people can be so willfully choking and squashing when it comes to emotions. *sigh* And how do we encourage unhealthy friendships?! Am I being too harsh? Shouldn't friends encourage us on our paths as well? Aren't we all here to help one another? grr.

... so i see you're online. what a coincidence...
04:05pm 06/06/2007

Maggie
because I was online when I wrote this. err, am online while writing this. whatever. :0)

okie, I must inflict this upon everyone. In a random email from an old friend, she says "Hah! I found you out!" then goes on to type this:

The Gypsy Bohemian

These are the expatriate types. They create their own Gypsy nirvana wherever they go. They are folksy flower children, hippies, psychedelic travelers, fairy folk, dreamers, Deadheads, Phish fans, medievalists, anachronistic throwbacks to a more romantic time…Gypsies scatter like seeds on the wind, don’t own a watch, show up on your doorstep and disappear in the night. They’re happy to sleep in your barn and may have without you even knowing it.

So apparently there's a Bohemian Manifesto and I missed it. :0)

This is the entire name of the book: Bohemian Manifesto: A Field Guide to Living on the Edge

So I took a giant rubber ducky with me to class yesterday...
10:03am 06/06/2007

Maggie
And now i'm feeling all deviously devious and mischievously mischievous.

I want to push buttons and flip switches.

There is a piggy puppet that sings sitting on G's keyboard. I am inspired.

Despite the sleepy and threatening tired, I wish to prance about and dust people with smiley wonder.

A good friend *cough*Neheti*cough* told me yesterday that I needed to, once again, look at the world with wonder and remember those things that I am grateful for. Funny thing: she told me this AFTER I took the giant rubber ducky to class. Why did I not get it THEN? Am I not getting enough sleep? How do you invigorate your life with wonder?

Well, the last question is simple enough... you do something random and silly to make someone smile. or laugh. laughs are good too.

Thank you Eris for assuring that there is enough Prickle in my life so that I do not sleep through it. Thank you Eris for keeping ZombieMaggie at bay. :0) Thank you Eris for whispering in my ear to stand and dance and laugh. Thank you Eris.

I am grateful for friends. I am grateful for good friends. I am grateful that they remind me that magic is EVERYWHERE. I am grateful that I can believe that shiny rocks are faery treasure. I am grateful.

EDIT: I found more lyrics! I find folk music fascinating... and folk dance... and folk costuming... ok ok, anything with the word "folk." One of the many reasons that I'm not all that popular with the hoity-toity academes. Meh. At least the anthropology crowd gets it.

You scored as Storyteller. The Storyteller is in it for the plot: the sense of mystery and the fun of participating in a narrative that has the satisfying arc of a good book or movie. He enjoys interacting with well-defined NPCs, even preferring antagonists who have genuine motivations and personality to mere monsters. To the Storyteller, the greatest reward of the game is participating in a compelling story with interesting and unpredictable plot threads, in which his actions and those of his fellow characters determine the resolution.

With apologies to Robin Laws.
